If you are looking for local history then you may want to visit the Gadsden Museum located in Old Mesilla. Its a privately owned museum with a number of rare and unique artifacts such as the original jail cell doors that held Billy the Kid before his trial in Mesilla, an original painting of the celebration of the Gadsden Purchase by Col. Albert J. Fountain, Jr., plus Native American art and other unique western memorabilia.
