How many people do you employ?
Just myself for now
How did you start your business and why?
When I moved here I realized that there was nothing like this in town or near Las Cruces/El Paso area.
Where did your business name come from?
My name is spelled Rubi but everyone always spells it Ruby so I just embraced it and went with the Y.
What Inspired you to start your business?
Wanted to bring something new to the community of Las Cruces.
What is your Business Mission?
To create a fun experience for our customers when they come into the hat bar to customize their own hats.
What are your biggest challenges as a business owner?
Trying to balance home-business life. I am also a full time student (GO AGGIES!) and a mom of 4, it’s hard finding balance with all those while running a business. Thank God for my supportive husband!
What is your motivation? What keeps you going and inspired everyday?
My family and seeing customers get so excited when they see their hats ready.
What was your biggest challenge or risk? How did it work out?
Since there wasn’t anything like this in town I was not sure how people were going to react to it. But we’ve received excellent feedback from the community, it has been amazing seeing all the support we get since the day we opened a store front. Customers love the idea and the experience of customizing their own hats!
What sets your business apart from other businesses?
It’s a very unique experience, we are the first hat bar in Las Cruces with a wide variety of accessories to customize your hats.
What is an interesting fact about your business that the public might not know about?
We are the first hat bar in Las Cruces.
We have brim hats, trucker hats and now beanies too! Hats are customized from the hat band to the branding we can add to them.
How did you end up in Las Cruces? What brought you here?
I moved here with my family and 2 years ago fue to my husband’s job.
What are your biggest rewards for owning and running a small business?
Meeting so many amazing people and bringing the hat bar concept to the community, a concept that a lot of people haven’t heard about before.
Tell us a little history about your business and how it has evolved over time.
I started a few years back selling hats at a Farmers Market in Texas. When I moved to Las Cruces I sold everything because I didn’t think I would be doing this again. Few months into living here I noticed there wasn’t a hat bar in town. So, with the support of my husband, I went and bought everything I needed again. I started doing events and pop ups in town, then I opened a shop in downtown Las Cruces at La Esquina Plaza, and recently relocated to a bigger space which is our current location.
What is your business moto?
You don’t have to be creative in order to make a hat, we can come up with something together that you will love.
It’s all about having fun while making it and trusting the process.
How do you support the local community?
By bringing something fun and new to Las Cruces. I also love supporting other small businesses, whether it’s by sharing their posts on our social media or by shopping small.
What is your favorite quote? What inspires you?
My family inspires me. Showing my kids that anything is possible you just have to work hard for it. I want to inspire them to always follow their dreams and to do what they love.
How do you see your company growing in the future? Anything new on the horizon?
I have lots of plans for the hat bar that I can’t say yet. But one thing is to hopefully, with the support of our customers, get a bigger space where we can also showcase some of our other amazing small local businesses and artisans.
Happiest moment as a business owner?
When people come in to the shop and say their friend or relative told them about our shop, when our customers tag us in pictures wearing our hats and seeing how excited people get when we put together the hat that they customized to their own liking.
What is the secret to running a successful business in a small town?
Staying consistent, positive and get involved with the community. Go to events, to business, meet the community and promote on social media.
Any final thoughts? Anything else you would like to share?
I am so grateful for how supportive the Las Cruces community has been since I started this journey.
I want to invite everyone to come make hats, take a picture at the hat wall and just come see what the hat bar is about.
We also offer hat parties. People can book and we can come set up at a house, a venue or host at the bar. We do corporate events, weddings, bachelorette parties, bridal showers, birthday parties, team bonding events and more.
